Years later, during his post-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Katrina\" target=\"_blank\">Katrina<\/a> exile in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago<\/a>, Tisserand would take his own young son to an exhibit of comics at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milwaukee_Art_Museum\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Art Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was carrying my son in my arms then \u2014 he\u2019s 6&#8242;-4&#8243; now \u2014 and reading the captions out loud. I was feeling the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans<\/a> exile at that point, and I could imagine the way <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Herriman\" target=\"_blank\">Herriman<\/a> felt as a 10 year-old in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a>, and I was looking for a New Orleans story. This was a story about New Orleans that I could tell from Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, years after chasing the story across the country, Tisserand has produced the first full-length biography of a great New Orleans character and an original American artist in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=50200\" target=\"_blank\">Krazy: George Herriman, A Life in Black and White<\/a>\u201d (HarperCollins, $35).<\/p>\n<p>Herriman (1880-1944) was born in New Orleans to a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples#Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\">Creole<\/a> family, free people of color who moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a> in search of better educational opportunities.
