{"id":51031,"date":"2016-12-31T01:03:18","date_gmt":"2016-12-31T01:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=51031"},"modified":"2016-12-31T01:03:18","modified_gmt":"2016-12-31T01:03:18","slug":"author-joseph-boyden-defends-indigenous-heritage-after-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=51031","title":{"rendered":"Author Joseph Boyden defends indigenous heritage after investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/2016\/12\/26\/author-joseph-boyden-defends-indigenous-heritage-after-investigation.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Author Joseph Boyden defends indigenous heritage after investigation<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Toronto Star<\/a><br \/>\n2016-12-26<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coleyt\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Nicole Thompson<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The Canadian Press<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Author responds after investigation by <a href=\"http:\/\/aptn.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal Peoples Television Network<\/a> into his background.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A celebrated Canadian author who writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Nations\" target=\"_blank\">First Nations<\/a> heritage and culture is defending himself on Twitter after his ancestry was questioned.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/josephboyden\/status\/812798846438928384\" target=\"_blank\">statement posted to his Twitter account<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Boyden\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Boyden<\/a> said he is of \u201cmostly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celts\" target=\"_blank\">Celtic<\/a> heritage,\u201d but he also has <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nipmuc\" target=\"_blank\">Nipmuc<\/a> roots on his father\u2019s side and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ojibwe\" target=\"_blank\">Ojibway<\/a> roots on his mother\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Boyden has won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/2008\/11\/12\/joseph_boyden_wins_50000_giller_prize.html\" target=\"_blank\">Scotiabank Giller Prize<\/a> and his work was nominated for the Governor General\u2019s award. He is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_of_Canada\" target=\"_blank\">Order of Canada<\/a> and was an honorary witness at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Truth_and_Reconciliation_Commission_(Canada)\" target=\"_blank\">Truth and Reconciliation Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He made his remarks in response to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=50970\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal Peoples Television Network investigation<\/a> by award-winning reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JorgeBarrera\" target=\"_blank\">Jorge Barrera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation digs into the different claims of indigenous ancestry Boyden has made throughout his life, and the evidence \u2014 or lack thereof \u2014 to back it up.<\/p>\n<p>Barrera wrote that the author is predominantly Celtic and has also referred to having <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=414\" target=\"_blank\">Metis<\/a>, Ojibway, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mi%27kmaq\" target=\"_blank\">Mi\u2019kmaq<\/a> and Nipmuc heritage.<\/p>\n<p>He said Boyden sometimes referred to himself as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anishinaabe\" target=\"_blank\">Anishinabe<\/a>, which includes the \u201cculturally related\u201d Ojibway, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odawa\" target=\"_blank\">Odawa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algonquian_peoples\" target=\"_blank\">Algonquin peoples<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, Boyden said that he mistakenly said he was Metis, which is traditionally applied to descendants of French traders and trappers and indigenous women in the Canadian northwest&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/2016\/12\/26\/author-joseph-boyden-defends-indigenous-heritage-after-investigation.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author Joseph Boyden defends indigenous heritage after investigation The Toronto Star 2016-12-26 Nicole Thompson The Canadian Press Author responds after investigation by Aboriginal Peoples Television Network into his background.
