They\u2019re both in interracial marriages with biracial children, and that\u2019s the subject of their upcoming film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.documentary.org\/film\/mixed\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mixed<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody kept telling us this film is about the two of you. And we said, \u2018No, it\u2019s not.\u2019 But then somebody would say, \u2018Why are you making this film?\u2019\u201d Jayaswal recalls.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary is a travelogue\u2014talking with people in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlanta\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleveland\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Houston\" target=\"_blank\">Houston<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a>, among other places\u2014but Jayaswal and Borum Chattoo are inextricably linked to the subject matter at hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a journey film about the two of us finding mixed-race stories across America,\u201d says Jayaswal, an associate professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.american.edu\/soc\" target=\"_blank\">American University\u2019s School of Communication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the process, they\u2019ve discovered so much more about their country\u2014and themselves. \u201cWe actually had all these questions. How does mixed-race identity develop? So we talked to a psychologist about that. What\u2019s the media representation? So we talked to a bunch of Hollywood people.
