“There’s no protocol for a man circling the Earth either, sir,” Taraji P. Henson<\/a> retorts in my favorite line from the new trailer for the movie “Hidden Figures<\/a>,” due\u00a0theaters this January.<\/p>\n

Henson plays Katherine Johnson<\/a>, a brilliant mathematician at NASA<\/a> working on the space program in its earliest days, beginning in the 1950s.\u00a0Many of\u00a0NASA’s first missions\u00a0were made possible by Johnson’s intrepid,\u00a0unparalleled\u00a0calculations.<\/p>\n

The movie is based on a nonfiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly<\/a>, who grew up near NASA’s Langley Research Center<\/a>, where Johnson and her colleagues worked.<\/p>\n
