Now, for the second weekend since its wide-release debut, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hidden_Figures\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Hidden Figures<\/em><\/a>\u2014the true story of three black female mathematicians at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NASA\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>\u2014is number one at the box office. It\u2019s raked in roughly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/scottmendelson\/2017\/01\/15\/box-office-hidden-figures-tops-mlk-weekend-rogue-one-passing-500m-domestic\/#479df6eb62fd\" target=\"_blank\">$6o million<\/a> so far, and counting.<\/p>\n<p>The inspiring story of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">Katherine Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/crgis.ndc.nasa.gov\/crgis\/images\/4\/4a\/MaryJackson.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Jackson<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorothy_Vaughan\" target=\"_blank\">Dorothy Vaughan<\/a> has reenergized the ongoing conversation about the importance of inclusivity in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics\" target=\"_blank\">STEM<\/a>. Though we\u2019ve long done away with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Crow laws<\/a> depicted in <em>Hidden Figures<\/em>, black women in are still <a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/122185\/stem-black-women#.K4yVWs7fp\" target=\"_blank\">notoriously underrepresented<\/a> in mathematical sciences, including physics. A quick look at the numbers proves it: between 1973 and 2012, 22,172 white men received PhDs in physics. Only 66 black women did.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IBJIYONGI\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein<\/a> was one of those women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/a-black-female-astrophysicist-explains-why-hidden-figur-1791297931\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.kinja-img.com\/gawker-media\/image\/upload\/s--0UJat_T---\/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636\/hhtwip4zcyoidh9bjte4.jpg\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IBJIYONGI\" target=\"_blank\">Chanda Prescod-Weinstein<\/a> <em>Image Credit: GR21 LOC<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Prescod-Weinstein became the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45118\" target=\"_blank\">63rd black American woman to ever earn a PhD in physics<\/a>, from the Perimeter Institute at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
