(Photo by Chris McGrath\/<em>Getty Images<\/em>)<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Friday marks the end of an historic and improbable presidency of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Hussein Obama<\/a>, the first black president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nv9NwKAjmt0\" target=\"_blank\">2008 victory speech<\/a>, President Obama emphasized a message of hope and said that \u201cchange had come to America.\u201d His presidency marked what some believed was a milestone in race relations and the ushering in of a \u201cpostracial\u201d country.<\/p>\n<p>For African-Americans, President Obama was a powerful symbol of what African-Americans\u00a0could achieve in a country stained by a history of anti-black racism and oppression. So, what was the psychological impact of Barack Obama\u2019s presidency on black America?<\/p>\n<p>As an African-American professor of psychology and Black Studies and a scholar on racial identity, I am particularly interested in this question. The election of Obama as president was an indicator for some African-Americans that racism against blacks was finally decreasing.
