His father was half Chinese, part <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nooksack_(tribe)\" target=\"_blank\">Nooksack<\/a> and part <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Squamish_people\" target=\"_blank\">Squamish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Early on, Gong was raised by his grandparents, father, stepmother and scads of relatives in a rustic community north of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abbotsford,_British_Columbia\" target=\"_blank\">Abbotsford, B.C.<\/a> Later, his family moved into Nooksack Indian Tribe housing near <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deming,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\">Deming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whatcom_County,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\">Whatcom County<\/a> \u2014 he graduated from Nooksack Valley High in 1992 \u2014 Gong learned to navigate in a world where mixed-race people often struggle to define themselves, and where other people prefer to slot them into simple categories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t quite figure out what I was,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I knew I wasn\u2019t part of the mainstream.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/1200\/story\/893233.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nooksack Tribe member explores multiracial culture The Bellingham Herald 2009-09-28 Dean Kahn Louie Gong grew up eating American Indian bread for breakfast and Chinese dinners cooked on a camp stove.
