The mixed-blood son of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hudson%27s_Bay_Company\" target=\"_blank\">Hudson\u2019s Bay Company<\/a> fur trader and a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nez_Perce_people\" target=\"_blank\">Nez Perce Indian<\/a> woman, Duncan accompanied the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pend_d%27Oreilles\" target=\"_blank\">Pend d\u2019Oreille<\/a> Indians on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bison_hunting\" target=\"_blank\">buffalo hunt<\/a> and horse-stealing expedition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montana\" target=\"_blank\">Montana<\/a> plains during the early 1870s. During the late nineteenth century\u00a0he was put in charge of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Connah_Site\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Connah<\/a>, the Hudson\u2019s Bay Company post on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and worked as an independent trader across the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Rocky_Mountains\" target=\"_blank\">northern Rocky Mountains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan established a hotel and restaurant, among other businesses, on the Flathead Reservation. In 1878 and 1879 he wrote a history of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nez_Perce_War\" target=\"_blank\">1877 Nez Perce Indian War<\/a>, which was published in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deer_Lodge,_Montana\" target=\"_blank\">Deer Lodge, Montana<\/a>, newspaper.
