A man who looked like me was on-screen, announcing his candidacy for the presidency, answering questions from the nice white lady interviewer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBC_Studios_(New_York_City)\" target=\"_blank\">Rockefeller Center studio<\/a>. When I got home from school that day, I googled that man, someone I\u2019d never seen or heard of before. His name was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like Obama, I\u2019m a half-black, half-white kid who was raised by a single white mother. Reading through his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia page<\/a> that afternoon had me sold\u2014I was ready to see myself represented in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oval_Office\" target=\"_blank\">Oval Office<\/a>, ready to watch a man like me take the presidential oath of office. My fourteen-year-old hopes were suddenly bound up in this man\u2019s trajectory toward the presidency.
