My childhood was the scent of coconut oil hair cream and the taste of bean pie after Friday prayers in a <a href=\"http:\/\/thenationsmosque.org\/about\/the-late-imam-wd-mohammed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bilalian mosque<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Side,_Chicago\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago&#8217;s south side<\/a>. I knew the words to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nkosi_Sikelel%27_iAfrika\" target=\"_blank\">Nkosi Sikelel&#8217; iAfrika<\/a> and called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Washington\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Washington<\/a> my mayor, even though I lived in the suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>My parents had immigrated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sudan.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sudan<\/a> in the late 1970s and raised my sister and me to be comfortable in our skin.
