This past weekend I went to see a film that reminded me of that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bbcfilms\/film\/a_united_kingdom\" target=\"_blank\">A United Kingdom<\/a>&#8221; reminds us that it wasn&#8217;t too long ago that skin color was a barrier to overcome for some couples. In fact, it wasn&#8217;t until the year 2000 when the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alabama\" target=\"_blank\">Alabama<\/a> finally changed its decision and lifted the ban on\u00a0the right to an interracial marriage in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2015\/02\/09\/alabama-was-a-final-holdout-on-desegregation-and-interracial-marriage-it-could-happen-again-on-gay-marriage\/?utm_term=.6004e23d29ca\" target=\"_blank\">state<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just 55 years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arizona\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1963\/12\/17\/race-marriage-and-law-pamerican-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\">repealed its ban<\/a> on interracial marriages. Many of our parents lived to witness this\u00a0repeal, yet we tend to forget this\u00a0unfortunate part of history.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AvOWLRNxVs8?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This film reminds us that a visual image today of an interracial couple\u00a0is almost entirely a non-issue, certainly among millennials. As a college student at ASU, I witness many interracial couples daily, which is something past generations could not witness.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the flaws our world has when it comes to race relations, I believe people, especially younger people and students, are leading the way to a more accepting society&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Though the film addressed a racial issue,\u00a0it wouldn&#8217;t\u00a0address why people were so uncomfortable\u00a0seeing an interracial couple.<\/p>\n<p>Author and\u00a0<em>Time<\/em> magazine contributor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alcphd\" target=\"_blank\">Arica L. Coleman Ph.D<\/a>, said that this has been an on-going problem with the film industry.<\/p>\n<p>She said she gives credit to the industry for highlighting important and progressive moments in historical films, but she\u00a0also finds a problem in those same films for\u00a0not presenting the full picture to the public when it comes down to race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are problematic \u2014 they sell an illusion \u2014\u00a0and a problem I have with the topic of interracial marriage is the whole notion of using interracial marriage as a sign of progress with race, but it also can be used as an eraser,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Also, just like most of the time with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood<\/a>, it&#8217;s almost always\u00a0the black man with the exotic white woman, which continues to show that the lack for black women is still present.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statepress.com\/article\/2017\/02\/spopinion-the-film-a-united-kingdom-reminds-us-of-the-progress-within-interracial-marriage\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I believe we\u00a0are undoubtedly the most progressive\u00a0generation so far.
