Yes, we&#8217;re alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banks, who is from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arizona\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona<\/a>, is undeniably a modern American woman. She is also Native American.<\/p>\n<p>And although \u2014 until the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dakota_Access_Pipeline_protests\" target=\"_blank\">Dakota Access Pipeline protests<\/a> \u2014 Native Americans as a modern people rarely graced the national headlines or broke into the modern American psyche, many do lead lives, on and off reservations.<\/p>\n<p>Banks grew up primarily on a reservation. She\u2019s culturally <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hopi\" target=\"_blank\">Hopi<\/a> and registered in a tribe \u2014 just a different one than her adopted family.
