NOCCO\u2019s<\/a> Feb. 18-19 concerts will feature a work by local composer Hanna Benn<\/a>; works by Davida Ingram<\/a>, Alex Guy<\/a> and Rick Benjamin<\/a>, rooted in Scott Joplin\u2019s<\/a> opera, \u201cTreemonisha<\/a>\u201d; and works by Alvin Singleton<\/a> and George Walker<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

It is the very subject of \u201cResonance,\u201d North Corner Chamber Orchestra\u2019s<\/a> concert \u201cCelebrating Black American Composers,\u201d that left Seattle<\/a>-based composer Hanna Benn<\/a>, 29, in a bit of quandary. As much as she was delighted to work with one of the world\u2019s few conductorless chamber orchestras, her commission to honor black American composers left her pondering the fact that she is biracial, and does not see herself as either black or white.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the last couple of years, I\u2019ve been trying to understand where I come from, and my responsibility as a biracial person,\u201d she explained by phone and email. \u201cI want to completely embrace my blackness \/ my whiteness.\u201d…<\/p>\n
