target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rafu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/GEORGE-TOSHIO-JOHNSTON-225x300.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of last month\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=49853\" target=\"_blank\">Hapa Japan Festival 2017<\/a> was a screening of a pair of documentaries I was very interested in viewing: \u201cFall Seven Times, Get Up Eight: The Japanese War Brides\u201d and \u201cRising Sun, Rising Soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both screened Thursday, Feb. 23, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Tokyo,_Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Little Tokyo<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janm.org\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese American National Museum\u2019s<\/a> Tateuchi Democracy Forum, with filmmakers from each in attendance to speak about the respective documentaries afterwards and to take audience questions.<\/p>\n<p>While different in emphasis, both \u201cFall Seven Times\u201d and \u201cRising Sun\u201d had at their respective cores a shared source, namely the so-called Japanese <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_bride\" target=\"_blank\">war bride<\/a> phenomenon that occurred following <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japan\" target=\"_blank\">Japan\u2019s<\/a> defeat after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\" target=\"_blank\">World War II<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was during that post-war occupation period when thousands upon thousands of U.S. military personnel from all branches of the Armed Forces, as well as civil service employees, went to Japan and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okinawa_Prefecture\" target=\"_blank\">Okinawa<\/a>, the latter of which was a quasi-U.S. military colony that didn\u2019t regain Japanese prefectural status until 1972&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;In today\u2019s environment, when no one in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Coast_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">West Coast<\/a> or big cities pauses when seeing a mixed-race couple in which one of the two is an Asian, these two documentaries do underscore what a big deal the Japanese war bride phenomenon really was&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a
