They would amble past the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\">George Washington Bridge<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morris%E2%80%93Jumel_Mansion\" target=\"_blank\">Morris-Jumel Mansion<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jumelterracebooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jumel Terrace Books<\/a> and other landmarks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_Manhattan\" target=\"_blank\">Upper Manhattan<\/a> neighborhoods where both authors currently live.<\/p>\n<p>Both Raboteau and Rhodes-Pitts are young mothers in their 30s whose nonfiction books share a common theme: a yearning for some sort of promised land. For Rhodes-Pitts, whose book is the first in a planned trilogy about black utopias, that place is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem\" target=\"_blank\">Harlem<\/a>; for Raboteau, it is not just one place, but a series of locations where displaced blacks have endeavored to find a homeland.<\/p>\n<p>Raboteau\u2019s journey began in Israel, where her best friend from childhood had moved to make <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aliyah\" target=\"_blank\">aliyah<\/a>, but it also led her through such locations as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamaica\" target=\"_blank\">Jamaica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethiopia\" target=\"_blank\">Ethiopia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghana\" target=\"_blank\">Ghana<\/a>, where she came to challenge some of her long-held assumptions about race and religion. <em>The Forward\u2019s<\/em> Adam Langer invited the authors to have another conversation, this time at Emily Raboteau\u2019s office at City College where she teaches.
