He was actually born into slavery on a cotton plantation in southern <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texas\" target=\"_blank\">Texas<\/a>, and his real name was William Ellis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/staff\/maggie-martin\/\"><strong>Maggie Martin<\/strong><\/a> talks with historian and author <a href=\"http:\/\/karljacoby.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karl Jacoby<\/a>, who wrote a book about Ellis.
