It isn\u2019t so simple<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We can\u2019t screw our way beyond racism. Many think mixed-race babies and browner demographics will automatically usher in a post-racial world. They interpret the projections of a \u201cmajority-minority\u201d shift in our nation \u2013 now set to take place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2015\/cb15-tps16.html\" target=\"_blank\">2044<\/a> \u2013 as a sign of guaranteed progress. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=33601\" target=\"_blank\">Changing faces<\/a> in the US are seen as anti-racist destiny. But don\u2019t overestimate the power of this post-racial cocktail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jordan_Peele\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Peele\u2019s<\/a> brilliant film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2017\/mar\/04\/jordan-peele-interview-get-out-its-about-purging-our-fears-horror-film-daniel-kaluuya\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Get Out<\/em><\/a> reminds me of the importance of questioning overly optimistic narratives of racial progress. Made by someone who has been open about being biracial and married to a white women, this film creatively uses the genre of horror to depict the persistence of racism through a story about an interracial couple. In many ways, it can be seen as a strident critique of a liberal brand of racism that has blossomed in the post-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">Obama<\/a> era&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;If more mixed people guarantee greater tolerance, then <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil<\/a> \u2013 and most of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_America\" target=\"_blank\">Latin America<\/a> \u2013 should be a racial paradise. Although a great degree of \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=14551\" target=\"_blank\">mestizaje<\/a>\u2019 or racial mixing has taken place since the time of conquest, Indigenous and Afro-descendent people in Latin America remain disproportionately poor, discriminated against, and locked out from opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/sociology.duke.edu\/people?Gurl=%2Faas%2FSociology&amp;Uid=4003&amp;subpage=profile\" target=\"_blank\">Eduardo Bonilla-Silva<\/a>, in his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=52644\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Racism without Racists<\/em><\/a>, has speculated whether the racial order in the US might eventually resemble that of Latin American and Caribbean nations.
