Meet <\/em>Doctor Who\u2019s<\/a> new companion, Pearl Mackie<\/a>. She tells Sarah Hughes why it\u2019s so important to have diverse actors on TV, and how her friends are making sure her feet stay on the ground<\/em><\/p>\n

The moment when Pearl Mackie<\/a> understood just how big her new role as Doctor Who\u2019s<\/em><\/a> latest companion was came early in filming. \u201cThere was a scene in episode three that was so awesome \u2013 in the sense that I was awestruck by the scale of the set \u2013 that it was really humbling. I stood there looking at it, thinking, \u2018Oh. Wow. This is a very big show.\u2019 When you see it from the inside, that\u2019s when you realise how massive it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s not wrong \u2014 Doctor Who<\/em> is, as 29-year-old Mackie puts it, \u201cproperly, globally huge\u201d. The most successful science fiction series in television history, this tale of a history-haunted time lord<\/a> and his adventures across the universe with various sidekicks has progressed far beyond its days as children\u2019s tea-time entertainment. In 2013 the 50th anniversary special broke viewing records around the world after being aired in 94 countries simultaneously while the current Doctor<\/a>, Peter Capaldi<\/a>, began his stint by undertaking a rock star-style world tour with then companion Jenna Coleman<\/a>, taking in Cardiff<\/a>, London<\/a>, Seoul<\/a>, Sydney<\/a>, New York<\/a>, Mexico City<\/a> and Rio de Janeiro<\/a>. At each stop they were greeted by queues of fans, many of them in costume. There were Weeping Angels and Daleks<\/a>, Cybermen<\/a> and companions, and a whole host of Doctors, from every stage of this very British institution\u2019s lengthy career…<\/p>\n

…She spent much of her own childhood searching for a similar jolt of recognition. \u201cWhen Alicia Keys<\/a> came out that was a big thing for me because she was mixed race as well,\u201d she says. \u201cThere were a lot of people I liked on screen, like Judi Dench<\/a>, she\u2019s wicked, but that\u2019s very different to having someone where you think, \u2018She looks like me, maybe I could do that.\u2019\u201d…<\/p>\n
