That makes her, in her own words, a &#8220;full-blooded Maori&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Culturally, people identify as Maori through their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whakapapa\" target=\"_blank\"><em>whakapapa<\/em><\/a>, while legally a person is defined as Maori if they are of Maori descent, even through one long-distant ancestor.<\/p>\n<p>However, the intermingling of different ethnicities in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Zealand\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a> over the past 200 years means all Maori people are thought to have some non-Maori ancestry, so would not be expected to have 100 per cent Maori DNA.<\/p>\n<p>But Kaipara, 33, is different.
