Last Thursday, the Students of Caribbean Ancestry<\/a> (SOCA) coordinated a one-woman show produced and written by Jamaican-American Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni<\/a>. This performance was part of \u201cHeritage Week\u201d celebrating SOCA heritage. Cox\u2019s interactive show, called \u201cOne Drop of Love<\/a>,\u201d explores history, family, class, justice and love. It challenges the audience to recognize the enduring power of the \u201cone drop rule<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 18th century, when the slave trade was in full force, many of the colonists who came to the Caribbean islands raped their slaves, resulting in mixed race children. Although some of these children were lighter skinned, like Cox, the \u201cone drop rule\u201d pronounced that one drop of African blood meant that the child was of African descent and therefore could not benefit from being the son or daughter of a white man. In fact, many millions of people in the United States<\/a> still endure the repercussions of such an arbitrary rule, centuries after it was created.<\/p>\n

Cox\u2019s performance, also produced by Ben Affleck<\/a> and Matt Damon<\/a>, aimed to address this issue of the \u201cone drop rule.\u201d As a half-Jamaican half-Caucasian woman, Fanshen has experienced her fair share of racial confusion…<\/p>\n
