Gamedze<\/strong><\/a>, Tutor, MA student<br \/>\n<em>University of Cape Town<\/em><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"552\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/rachel-dolezal-why-ignoring-the-painful-past-of-passing-is-indefensible-77123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.theconversation.com\/files\/167855\/width926\/file-20170504-21649-wy27my.jpg\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Civil rights advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rachel_Dolezal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rachel Dolezal<\/a> has been accused of falsely claiming she is African-American. <em>Stephanie Keith\/Reuters<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In 2015, American <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rachel_Dolezal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rachel Dolezal<\/a> captured the public imagination when the media discovered that she was white and had been passing as black for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Dolezal, who has had white ancestors for over three centuries, checked boxes like \u201cblack\u201d and \u201cAfrican-American\u201d on application forms, darkened her skin, and began to wear her hair in African-American styles. She lied about her past and family, and attempted to sue her alma mater, historically black Howard University for reverse racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack\u201d Dolezal was a lecturer in Africana studies and president of her local chapter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Association_for_the_Advancement_of_Colored_People\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Association for the Advancement of Colored People<\/a> NAACP.<\/p>\n<p>She recently visited South Africa to discuss non-racialism, but received resistance against her self-identification as \u201ctrans-black\u201d and her claim to an authentic, internal black identity.
