But it was Green\u2019s last point, mentioned almost as an aside \u2013 \u201cAnd of course, Steph is light-skinned so [players] want to make him out to be soft\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/Golden State Warriors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that got the most attention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To white Americans, the relationship between skin color and toughness or masculinity might not be obvious. They might associate skin color with race or with attractiveness. But toughness? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/book-reviews\/kathy-midge-wilson-ronald-hall-russell\/the-color-complex-the-last-taboo-among-african-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My first book<\/a>, published in 1992, referred to skin color as \u201cThe Last Taboo Among African Americans.\u201d It explored how African-Americans, within their community, grapple with prejudices that stem from their various shades of skin colors. If you\u2019re black, depending on the shade of your skin, other black people might think of you as \u201chigh yella\u201d or \u201cred-boned,\u201d a \u201cwhite wanna-be\u201d or just not \u201cblack enough.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>..After the first African slaves arrived at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamestown,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamestown, Virginia<\/a>, a population of mixed-race blacks emerged. Their masters and fellow slaves celebrated their exotic features \u2013 not quite African, but not exactly white. The women <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~psearls\/johnson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were called<\/a> \u201cfancy girls\u201d and paraded at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=9004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quadroon balls<\/a>, events for wealthy white men to meet and mingle with them.
