It argues that the construction and evolution of these categories reflected missionaries\u2019 changing interests and agendas.<\/p>\n<p><em>Defining M\u00e9tis<\/em> sheds light on the earliest phases of Catholic missionary work among Indigenous peoples in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">western<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">northern Canada<\/a>. It examines various interrelated aspects of this work, including the beginnings of residential schooling, transportation and communications, and relations between the Church, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hudson%27s_Bay_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hudson\u2019s Bay Company<\/a>, and the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>While focusing on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Missionary_Oblates_of_Mary_Immaculate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oblates of Mary<\/a> Immaculate and their central mission at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%8Ele-%C3%A0-la-Crosse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00cele-\u00e0-la-Crosse<\/a>, this study illuminates broad processes that informed Catholic missionary perceptions and impelled their evolution over a fifty-three-year period. In particular, this study illuminates processes that shaped Oblate conceptions of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Savage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>sauvage<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/m%C3%A9tis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>m\u00e9tis<\/em><\/a>. It does this through a qualitative analysis of documents that were produced within the Oblates\u2019 institutional apparatus\u2014official correspondence, mission journals, registers, and published reports.<\/p>\n<p>Foran challenges the orthodox notion that Oblate commentators simply discovered and described a singular, empirically existing, and readily identifiable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">M\u00e9tis<\/a> population.
