She was placed in St. Mary\u2019s Hostel on the outskirts of town because her mother was not able to take care of her. Her siblings were all sent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiwi_Islands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tiwi Islands<\/a>. \u201cWe were all taken and separated in different ways,\u201d she told the photographer. Joyce Napurrula-Schroeder was not quite 2 when it happened to her. Luke Morcom was a newborn, barely a week on this earth.<\/p>\n<p>All had the bad luck of being born \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">half caste<\/a>\u201d during <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australia\u2019s<\/a> disastrous experiment with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stolen_Generations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forced assimilation<\/a>. For 60 years, until 1970, government policies rounded up Aboriginal and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torres_Strait_Islands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torres Strait Islander<\/a> children deemed to be part-white and sent them to boarding schools and church-run missions. Like the Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Nations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Nations\u2019<\/a> and the United States\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Indian_boarding_schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indian boarding schools<\/a> that served as its model, Australia\u2019s program aimed to beat out all traces of indigenous culture, often literally.<\/p>\n<p>Run more like penal colonies than schools, these institutions scarred their young wards and their communities for life.<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, when <a href=\"http:\/\/matthewsherwood.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Sherwood<\/a>, a Canadian photojournalist, began documenting survivors of the boarding schools \u2014 the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stolen_Generations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stolen generations<\/a>,\u201d as Australia calls them \u2014 they unleashed hellish memories where neglect was the best it ever got&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/24\/australias-aboriginal-stolen-generation-tells-its-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alfred Calma was 4 years old when the police snatched him from his mother, never to live with her again.
