The final pillar of the debunked \u2018racial democracy<\/a>\u2019? Post-doctorate research project exposes racism and racial hierarchies within interracial\u00a0families<\/em><\/p>\n

One hundred and twenty-nine years after the abolition of slavery, and despite the myth of racial democracy, racial prejudice continues to be widespread in Brazilian society \u2013 so widespread that it even manifests itself within \u201cinterracial families\u201d. This was the conclusion of a study conducted by social psychologist Lia Vainer Schucman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The study was the postdoctoral theme carried out at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP) with support from FAPESP<\/a>, a collaboration of Felipe Fachim<\/a> and under the supervision of Belinda Mandelbaum<\/a>, coordinator of the Laboratory of Family Studies at the Institute of Psychology<\/a> at USP.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur objective was to verify if and how the racial hierarchies of society reproduce within families whose members self-classify differently in relation to \u2018race\u2019: as \u2018brancos\u2019 (whites), \u2018negros\u2019 (blacks) or \u2018mesti\u00e7os\u2019 (persons of mixed race). And how these hierarchies coexist and interact with affections,\u201d Schucman told FAPESP…<\/p>\n
