Virginia<\/em> decision<\/a> that invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage and made my existence, well, legal.<\/p>\n<p>At 50 years young, the decision that allowed people like my parents \u2014 who could see past shades of melanin \u2014 to marry anyone they pleased is holding strong.<\/p>\n<p>More or less.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until the year 2000 that 60 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alabama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama<\/a> voters finally elected to honor the Supreme Court\u2019s decision, and remove anti-miscegenation laws from their state constitution. A whole 60 percent!<\/p>\n<p>But they did it. And that\u2019s a cause for celebration.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also the perfect opportunity to take a look at privilege.
