Does Growing Population of Multiracial Kids Portend a Future with Less Racism?<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Fifty years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down laws that prevented people of different races from marrying<\/a> in Virginia<\/a>.\u00a0 Now, one of every six newlyweds choose partners of a different race or ethnicity. \u00a0So does this mean America is on the road to ending racism?\u00a0 And how do mixed race kids think of themselves.\u00a0 Those questions puzzled a UVA<\/a> alum whose new book offers intriguing answers<\/a>.\u00a0 Sandy Hausman has that story.<\/p>\n

Hephzibah Strmic-Pawl<\/a> grew up in rural Virginia where race consciousness was strong.\u00a0 Back then, the U.S. census bureau recorded only a handful of possible races for residents of the state.\u00a0 Now, however, that has changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we have 63 possible racial categories,\u201d \u00a0Strmic-Pawl\u00a0says.<\/p>\n

And looking at the younger members of our population, the assistant professor of sociology was startled by the number of kids who don\u2019t fit neatly into a single racial category…<\/p>\n
