Guevarra Jr. is the author of <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=18559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Becoming Mexipino: Multiethnic Identities and Communities in San Diego<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Growing up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Diego\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Diego<\/a>, I remember watching my <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/abuelo#Spanish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abuelito<\/a> tend the guava tree he grew for my mother, while singing along to the Mexican rancheras that blared from his\u00a0tiny radio in the backyard. When my mother called him in for lunch, he\u2019d start whistling, as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linda_Ronstadt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linda Ronstadt\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canciones_de_Mi_Padre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Canciones de mi Padre<\/em><\/a> echoed from the house. We both knew that we\u2019d be eating <em>caldo de res con arroz Mexicano<\/em>. Once a month, my Filipino grandfather, or tata, would also pay us visits from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco<\/a>. I\u2019d help him and my mother cook Filipino delicacies, like\u00a0chicken <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adobo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>adobo<\/em><\/a>, <em>pansit<\/em>, and <em>lumpia<\/em>.
