This first piece explores the history of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Colombians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro-Colombians<\/a> and the impact of the recently ended war with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FARC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FARC<\/a>. Subsequent stories will examine the current political environment.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Black activism started in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colombia<\/a> when Africans arrived in chains.<\/p>\n<p>Spaniards were early kingpins in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_slave_trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trans-Atlantic slave trade<\/a>, first importing kidnapped Africans into what was then <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Kingdom_of_Granada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Granada<\/a> in the 1520s\u2014a century before the British brought this epic crime against humanity to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Concentrated along the country\u2019s Pacific coast, enslaved people were forced to do agricultural labor and, primarily, to mine gold. This region became majority black during colonial times. It still is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Colombia never had legal segregation after slavery, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>. The national narrative of Colombia, like most of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin America<\/a>, has been that inequality is economic, not racial, and that significant racial mixing throughout the country\u2019s history proves that racism doesn\u2019t exist.
