Amari Jackson<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"552\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/atlantablackstar.com\/2017\/07\/01\/brazils-ongoing-race-problem-recent-study-uncovers-shocking-treatment-darker-skinned-children-interracial-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atlantablackstar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/GettyImages-674100450-768x512.jpg\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salvador,_Bahia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SALVADOR, BRAZIL<\/a> -Social psychologist finds Black Brazilian children in interracial families face shocking racism. <em>(Photo by Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe most shocking story I heard was told by a young woman, a university student who came to see me\u2026 she was phenotypically \u2018Black\u2019 but her mother was \u2018white.\u2019 She told me that when she was little, her mother would sing a lullaby with these words: \u2018Plantei uma cenoura no meu quintal \/ Nasceu uma negrinha de avental \/ Dan\u00e7a negrinha \/ N\u00e3o sei dan\u00e7ar \/ Pega no chicote, ela dan\u00e7a j\u00e1\u2019 [I planted a carrot in my backyard. \/ It sprouted a nigger girl in an apron. \/ Dance, little nigger girl! \/ I can\u2019t dance. \/ Show her the whip, she\u2019ll dance alright.] Her mother\u2019s lullaby wasn\u2019t just racist, it was a slave owner\u2019s song.\u201d <\/em>\u2014 Social psychologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bv.fapesp.br\/pt\/pesquisador\/665666\/lia-vainer-schucman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lia Vainer Schucman<\/a> from a June 2017 interview with Ag\u00eancia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fapesp.br\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAPESP<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazil<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps you\u2019ve heard of the \u2018bleach bath,\u2019 a popular process designed to significantly lighten one\u2019s skin. Or maybe the clothespin, the laundry drying device that doubles as a nighttime nasal clamp to narrow the width of what is regarded as a phenotypically Black nose. Here in the 21st century, such tragic racialized practices and psychoses are, unfortunately, still alive and well in countries across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>This acknowledged, there is a common perception that the more racially diverse and interracial a society and its relationships become, the less racism it will endure. It is a questionable line of reasoning particularly prevalent in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazil <\/a>where racially mixed societies and families are the norm. It fuels the popular national narrative that racial prejudice cannot exist in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South America\u2019s<\/a> largest country since \u201csomos todos iguais\u201d (\u201cwe are all equal\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bv.fapesp.br\/en\/bolsas\/155729\/the-role-of-affectivity-in-the-desconstruction-of-racism-a-psychosocial-study-of-interacial-famil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent study<\/a> by social psychologist and researcher Lia Vainer Schucman says otherwise. In it, Schucman interviewed interracial families from regions across Brazil willing to discuss the manifestations and impact of racism within their units as part of her postdoctoral work at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo.
