Teresa Hord Owens<\/small><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: On July 9, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_Church_(Disciples_of_Christ)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disciples of Christ<\/a> elected <a href=\"http:\/\/disciples.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Rev-Owens-bio-brief-revJan2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Teresa Hord Owens<\/a> to lead the denomination. While Rev. Owens is the first Black woman to lead a mainline Protestant organization in a solo capacity, we failed to mention\u00a0Rev. Denise Anderson. Anderson, a Black woman, was elected co-moderator of the Pentecostal Church (U.S.A.) last year alongside\u00a0Jan Edmiston. This marked the first time that the P.C. (USA) elected women as moderators and elected two co-moderators of either sex. The P.C.(USA) traditionally elects a moderator and vice-moderator.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a matter of days, <a href=\"http:\/\/disciples.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Rev-Owens-bio-brief-revJan2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Teresa Hord Owens<\/a> will become the general minister and president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_Church_(Disciples_of_Christ)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disciples of Christ<\/a>. The appointment, pending an election on July 9 during the Disciples of Christ General Assembly in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indianapolis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indianapolis<\/a>, will make Owens the first Black woman to lead a mainline Protestant denomination in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer nomination represents an opportunity for us to continue the important transformation of the church,\u201d said Chris Dorsey, Disciples of Christ president of higher education and leadership ministries. \u201cWe seek to be a church that is more inclusive and more holistic, and she is the right person to help us do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owens, a native <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hoosier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoosier<\/a>, was raised in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terre_Haute,_Indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terre Haute<\/a> and is a direct descendant of the free people of color who founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/lost-creek.org\/genealogy\/histories\/feature1.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lost Creek settlement<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vigo_County,_Indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vigo County<\/a>.
