The excavation has once again reminded us that 241 years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a> was founded, many Americans still don\u2019t know how to reconcile one of our nation\u2019s original sins with the story of its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_national_founders#.C2.A0United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Founding Fathers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just before the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Independence_Day_(United_States)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fourth of July<\/a>, <em>NBC News<\/em> ran a feature on the room, setting off a spate of coverage about the dig. Many of these stories described Hemings, the mother of six children with Jefferson, as the former president\u2019s \u201cmistress.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inquisitr.com\/4345063\/archaeologists-find-thomas-jeffersons-enslaved-mistress-living-quarters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Inquisitr<\/em><\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-4662350\/Archaeologists-Sally-Hemings-room-Monticello.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>, AOL and Cox Media Group all used the word (though Cox later updated its wording). So did an NBC News tweet that drew <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article159493264.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scathing criticism<\/a>, though its story accurately called her \u201cthe enslaved woman who, historians believe, gave birth to six of Jefferson\u2019s children.\u201d <em>The Washington Post<\/em> also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/the-washington-post-thomas-jefferson-sally-hemings-slavery-mistress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used \u201cmistress\u201d<\/a> in a headline and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/washingtonpost\/status\/833355264745152512?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tweet <\/a>about Hemings\u2019s room in February.<\/p>\n<p>Language like that elides the true nature of their relationship, which is believed to have begun when Hemings, then 14 years old, accompanied Jefferson\u2019s daughter to live with Jefferson, then 44, in Paris. She wasn\u2019t Jefferson\u2019s mistress; she was his property.
