{"id":5453,"date":"2010-02-22T02:43:40","date_gmt":"2010-02-22T02:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=5453"},"modified":"2010-02-24T18:52:49","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T18:52:49","slug":"black-history-month-play-explores-interracial-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=5453","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month play explores interracial issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/news\/local\/lake\/os-lk-black-history-play-20100220,0,182891.story\" target=\"_blank\">Black History Month play explores interracial issues<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\" target=\"_blank\">Orlando Sentinal<\/a><br \/>\n2010-02-20<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosalind Jennings<\/strong>, Special To The Orlando Sentinel<\/p>\n<p>Leesburg, [Florida] \u2013 Dolores Sandoval&#8217;s paternal grandmother was an African slave on a plantation, and that ancestor&#8217;s father was the white plantation owner.<\/p>\n<p>So she was mixed racially \u2013 an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=1146\" target=\"_blank\">octoroon<\/a>,&#8221; which is one-eighth African.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her father owned the plantation,&#8221; Sandoval said. &#8220;She was freed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_War_(United_States)\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of Black History Month, Sandoval will perform a play that traces her ancestry on both sides as they struggle with issues of race and especially the mixing of races and ethnicities. It will take place at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leesburgflorida.gov\/library\/calendar\/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=2338\" target=\"_blank\">6 p.m. Monday at the Leesburg Public Library<\/a>. The play is part of a series of lectures on global awareness sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaconcollege.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Beacon College<\/a> in Leesburg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My family is interracial, bi-racial, tri-racial, quad-racial\u2026right through to today,&#8221; said Sandoval, a Canadian resident.<\/p>\n<p>The one-hour play, &#8220;Coloured Pictures in Family Frames,&#8221; will include Sandoval&#8217;s ancestors as characters in short episodes that will fit together to tell her family&#8217;s story.
