He built his career on the systematic oppression\u00a0of blacks and Native Americans, becoming one of the country\u2019s most influential white supremacists. For more than three decades, from 1912 until 1946, Walter Ashby Plecker<\/a> used his position as head of Virginia\u2019s<\/a> Bureau of Vital Statistics to champion policies designed to protect what he considered a master white race.<\/p>\n

He was the father of the state\u2019s Racial Integrity Act of 1924<\/a>, which designated every person in the state as either white or \u201ccolored\u201d and criminalized interracial marriage. Plecker\u00a0insisted that any person with a single drop of \u201cNegro\u201d blood<\/a> couldn\u2019t be classified as white, and he\u00a0refused to even acknowledge that Native Americans existed in the commonwealth, effectively erasing their legal identities.<\/p>\n

Then, on Aug. 2, 1947 \u2014 one year after his retirement \u2014 Plecker\u00a0stepped into a\u00a0road in the Confederacy\u2019s<\/a> former capital and was hit by a car. Blacks and Indians had good reason to celebrate…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
