My half-joking thing is: I really want to trigger people. I want to read work that\u2019s going to trigger <em>me<\/em>. I\u2019m very committed to writing things that move people to a more uncomfortable place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uncomfortable\u2014and I mean this in the best way possible\u2014is a pretty good descriptor of Senna\u2019s latest novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=53907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New People<\/em><\/a>. The year is 1996. The place is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn<\/a>. Our protagonist is Maria, a Columbia University doctoral student struggling to finish her dissertation on modes of resistance in the hymns and songs recorded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peoples_Temple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peoples Temple<\/a>, the religious cult led by<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Jones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Jim Jones<\/a> (and ultimately wiped out in 1978, when its leader ordered nearly 1,000 of those who had followed him to the Guyanese settlement of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jonestown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonestown<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drinking_the_Kool-Aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drink cyanide-laced Kool-Aid<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Maria is biracial, adopted at birth by a single black mother, a graduate student who brought her daughter up on a steady diet of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audre_Lorde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Audre Lorde<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roots:_The_Saga_of_an_American_Family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Roots<\/em><\/a>, and bemoaned that the light skin and straight hair with which Maria was born never darkened or kinked. (The baby was a \u201cone-dropper,\u201d writes Senna, \u201cthat peculiarly American creation, white in all outside appearances but black for generations to come.\u201d) Now Maria is engaged to her college boyfriend, Khalil, whose skin is her exact same \u201cshade of beige,\u201d but who was raised by globe-trotting mixed parents in upper-middle-class bourgeois bohemian splendor, brought up to think of himself as a citizen of the world.
