A few years later, the sight of Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midshipman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">midshipmen<\/a> striding across an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annapolis,_Maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annapolis<\/a> football field solidified her desire to be the person who led troops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it take,\u201d she asked her mother at the football game, pointing to the cadets, \u201cto lead that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, more than a decade after her pretend marches in the woods, Cadet Askew, now 20, led the freshmen Army cadets for 12 miles \u2014 the first African-American woman to hold the highest student position at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Military_Academy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States Military Academy<\/a>. As the West Point corps of cadets first captain, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Virginia<\/a> resident will not only be at the forefront of every academy event, but she will set the class agenda and oversee the roughly 4,400 students&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Cadet Askew\u2019s mother, who works to develop affordable housing, is white and is divorced from Cadet Askew\u2019s father, who is African-American.
