I was fascinated by the\u00a0tumultuous (and oddly asexual) relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff, but mostly with the theme of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liminality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">liminality<\/a> that\u00a0runs through the book, and many\u00a0other works of gothic\u00a0literature. Liminality refers to something \u2013 or someone \u2013 that sits on the boundary between two things; it\u2019s a\u00a0middle ground between polar opposites. Kind\u00a0of like being mixed\u00a0race.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t realise it at the time, but I\u00a0identified with Heathcliff (he\u2019s a dark-skinned Gypsy anti-hero) because I\u00a0have been straddling the borders of race liminality my whole life.
