Some feel threatened by this diversity; some relish it.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us, I think, are unsure quite how to talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>We have many words to describe diversity. We ask people about their ancestry, their ethnicity, and \u2013 most awkwardly \u2013 their \u201cbackground\u201d. We seem least comfortable asking people about their \u201crace\u201d, and with good reason.<\/p>\n<p>Racial classification has been used to justify some of the most heinous crimes of modernity, including those <a href=\"https:\/\/aiatsis.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/products\/discussion_paper\/tatzc-dp08-genocide-in-australia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed on our own shores<\/a>.
