There was no hello. Just an angry voice on the other end of the line yelling obscenities about blacks and Latinos in North Philly<\/a>. The man grew up there, he shouted, back when it used to be \u201ca great white neighborhood.\u201d Then \u201cthe blacks\u201d and \u201cthe Puerto Ricans\u201d moved in and ruined it. They\u2019re garbage, he yelled. No, he seethed, garbage is better than them.<\/p>\n

Oh, and before I or anyone else called him a bigot, he wanted me to know something.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s no racist. His grandchildren are half-Puerto Rican.<\/p>\n

My heart sank. Poor kids…<\/p>\n

…Family doesn\u2019t inoculate anyone against racism.<\/p>\n

Tanya Hernandez<\/a>, professor of law at Fordham University and author of a forthcoming book, Multiracials and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination<\/em>, said it fits into a larger societal idea that having closer relationships with people of other races can make people more empathetic.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a nice thought\u00a0\u2013 especially after the post-racial fantasy we all fed on for the last eight years, and the\u00a0ongoing myth that as the country\u2019s demographics become more diverse,\u00a0racism will be eradicated. But the reality can be much\u00a0more complicated, and painfully personal…<\/p>\n
