I had no reason to question my race or my racial heritage. Why would I? I had only to look in the mirror to know the veracity of my whiteness \u2014 or so I thought.<\/p>\n<p>In 1995, while scrolling through the 1900 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana<\/a> census records looking for my mother\u2019s father, Azemar Frederic of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a>, I made a startling discovery. Azemar Frederic and his entire family were classified as black. In that split second, everything I knew about myself changed. When I walked into the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illinois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois<\/a> family history center, I was a white woman. When I left I didn\u2019t know who I was.
