With its focus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moorish_Science_Temple_of_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moorish Science Temple of America<\/a> (MST), the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nation_of_Islam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nation of Islam<\/a> (NOI), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Peace_Mission_movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father Divine\u2019s Peace Mission Movement<\/a> (PM), and a number of congregations of Ethiopian Hebrews, Weisenfeld challenges much of the previous scholarship by moving these groups from the margins to the center. She pushes the field to rethink its approach to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaihs.org\/the-future-of-the-african-american-religious-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">religion and race<\/a>, opening multiple avenues for future scholars..<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;One of my favorite ways to appreciate a new book is to consider how it has re-shaped my thinking about my own work. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=48585\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My first book<\/a> looked at the Afro-Creole community in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a>. No one characteristic differentiated Afro-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creoles<\/a> from other southern blacks. Much of the city\u2019s Afro-Creole population belonged to Catholic, educated, often mixed-race, French-speaking or bilingual families who were freed during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonial_history_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colonial<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plantation_era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antebellum era<\/a> and who were often wealthier than their Black, non-creole neighbors. When writing in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W._E._B._Du_Bois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">W.E.B. Du Bois<\/a>, local historian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rodolphe_Desdunes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rodolphe Lucien Desdunes<\/a> noted a distinction between Afro-Creoles and other Black Americans. Desdunes wrote, \u201cOne aspires to equality, the other to identity.
