New data released in October<\/a> by Statistics Canada<\/a> reveals a surprising spike in Canadians identifying as M\u00e9tis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 2016 census shows exponential growth, especially in the eastern part of the country.<\/p>\n

In Quebec<\/a>, over the last decade the number of people identifying themselves as M\u00e9tis is up 149 per cent. In Nova Scotia<\/a>, it’s up 124 per cent.<\/p>\n

But for some M\u00e9tis leaders, this isn’t necessarily a good news story.<\/p>\n

“It was very concerning for us to see such a change in the identifying of where the M\u00e9tis are and who they are,” said Dave Chartrand<\/a>, president of the Manitoba M\u00e9tis Federation<\/a>…<\/p>\n
