One after another, state and local laws drawing lines between hu\u00adman beings on the basis of their color have been found in conflict with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14th Amendment&#8217;s<\/a> promise of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equal_Protection_Clause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the equal protection of the laws<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only one area in the law of race relations has escaped this judicial scrutiny, and that is the most sensi\u00adtive of all\u2014sex. During the decade, the Supreme Court strained to avoid passing on the constitutionality of the network of laws forbidding the sexual relations between the races in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South<\/a> and some other states.<\/p>\n<p>Now the time for decision appears to be at hand. The Court has heard argument this term in a case <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McLaughlin_v._Florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chal\u00adlenging a Florida law against inter\u00adracial cohabitation<\/a>\u2014a case which threatens to stir again the deepest Southern racial fears.<\/p>\n<p>Even those who are ordinarily most skeptical of psychological generalisa\u00adtions are likely to agree with the view of many social scientists that sex is a fundamental factor in Southern racial attitudes.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWould you like to have your daughter marry a Negro?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Twenty years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gunnar_Myrdal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gunnar Myrdal<\/a> observed that this question was the automatic response of the Southern man on the street \u201cto any plea for social equality\u201d among whites and Negroes.
