She\u2019s taken flak from the right for years as a \u201cfake Indian,\u201d including taunts from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump<\/a>, who derisively calls her \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pocahontas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pocahontas<\/a>.\u2019\u2019 That clamor from the right will only grow with her increasing prominence&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Warren\u2019s family has ties to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oklahoma<\/a> dating from the end of the 19th century \u2014 before it was a state. Oklahoma is now home to more than 35 federally recognized tribes, and it\u2019s common for people there to claim Native American ancestry, often based on little more than family mythology. That\u2019s partially because there is, for some, a certain mystique in popular culture associated with American Indian ties and many families liked to include those ties in their lore.<\/p>\n<p>But claiming Native blood without evidence cuts to the very core of Native American identity because it usurps the rights American Indians have to define their own people and nations, according to native advocates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with Elizabeth Warren is she is not the average <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/wannabe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wannabe<\/a>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Cornsilk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Cornsilk<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cherokee<\/a> historian and genealogist. \u201cShe is an academic. She has a higher level of aptitude to examine these issues.
