‘A Lot Is Still So Much the Same’: Misty Copeland on Decades of Racism and Ballet<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

In the years since she became the first black ballerina to be a principal dancer<\/a> with the American Ballet Theatre<\/a>, Misty Copeland<\/a> has become a well-known symbol<\/a> of breaking down barriers in her art. The strides she has made build on the work of one particular dancer \u2014 a mentor of Copeland\u2019s, Raven Wilkinson<\/a>, who broke new ground in similar ways during the 1950s. And, though much has changed since that era in both civil rights and on the stage, Copeland tells TIME<\/em> that there is still a long way to go.<\/p>\n

Wilkinson\u2019s passion for ballet began at an early age and would take her around the nation with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo<\/a>. As the first African American ballerina to dance with a major touring troupe, she performed the coveted solo waltz in Les Sylphides<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

But her story \u2014 which is told in the new picture book Trailblazer: The Story of Ballerina Raven Wilkinson<\/em><\/a>, written by Leda Schubert<\/a> and illustrated by Theodore Taylor III<\/a>, and released Tuesday in time for Black History Month<\/a> in February \u2014 didn\u2019t always feel like a fairy tale…<\/p>\n
