Luna <\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/opinion-salas-pujols-black-latinos-census_us_5aa03347e4b002df2c603a9f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Latinx in the U.S.<\/a>, bicultural, bilingual \u2015 if they are lucky \u2015 and born to immigrant parents, there is no motherland.<\/p>\n<p>Though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/03\/01\/afro-latino-a-deeply-rooted-identity-among-u-s-hispanics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25 percent of U.S. Latinos self-identify as Afro-Latino<\/a>, we are not always made to feel at home in our own country. To be <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latinx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latinx<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> is to encounter xenophobic rhetoric from the top of our nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/1\/11\/16880804\/trump-shithole-countries-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political leadership<\/a> down to its base. To be black Latinx is to discover that xenophobia layered with anti-black rhetoric brews even among our own ethnic group.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars <a href=\"https:\/\/losafrolatinos.com\/2012\/03\/30\/qa-with-miriam-jimenez-roman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miriam Jim\u00e9nez Rom\u00e1n<\/a> and the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afrolatinoforum.org\/afro-latin-reader.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Flores<\/a> consider <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W._E._B._Du_Bois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">W.E.B. Du Bois<\/a> when describing the experience of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Latin_Americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro-Latino<\/a> in the U.S. as a triple consciousness \u2014 an awareness of being black, Latino and American. It is an elastic awareness, a way of moving in the world that has been woefully underexplored in America and in Spanish-language media and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>As an Afro-Latina, I often wondered: <em>Where are my people?<\/em> Where are those who crave <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mang\u00fa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mang\u00fa<\/a> for breakfast, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuban_sandwich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuban sandwich<\/a> for lunch and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tres_leches_cake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tres leches<\/a> dessert? Where are those who love the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/03\/netflix-one-day-at-a-time-renewed-season-3-1201943700\/https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/opinion-reyes-one-day-time_us_5aba68e6e4b0decad04e760f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Day at a Time<\/a>\u201d reboot with a Latin cast but winced when Lydia, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rita_Moreno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rita Moreno<\/a>, repeats with conviction, \u201cCubans are white!\u201d Didn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grandparent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abuela<\/a> dance to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celia_Cruz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celia Cruz<\/a> every morning as she made breakfast?<\/p>\n<p>As soon as I could, I journeyed far from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Jersey<\/a> to find my people. I looked for my kindred in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominican_Republic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominican Republic<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazil<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a> and in the maternal monolith I once imagined <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa<\/a> to be.<\/p>\n<p>I was looking for that mythical interstitial place where my blackness and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latinidad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latinidad<\/a> could peacefully coexist.
