This year\u2019s book was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dreams_from_My_Father\" target=\"_blank\">Dreams from My Father<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, on the same evening that President Obama addressed a sea of gray-clad cadets at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Military_Academy\" target=\"_blank\">Westpoint<\/a>, three members of the UW faculty discussed Obama\u2019s candor and his struggles with multiraciality in his autobiography with hundreds of UW freshmen who had read the book.<\/p>\n<p>The book demands introspection from its readers and frames the \u201cfreshman experience\u201d in a whole new way, said University of Washington faculty member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.com.washington.edu\/joseph\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ralina Joseph<\/a> Dec. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Panelists were Communication Professor Dr. Joseph and Drs. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polisci.washington.edu\/Directory\/Faculty\/Faculty\/faculty_fraga.html\" target=\"_blank\">Luis Fraga<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polisci.washington.edu\/Directory\/Faculty\/Faculty\/faculty_parker.html\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Parker<\/a>, of the Political Science Department.<\/p>\n<p>The professors spoke candidly about their own experiences with multiculturalism and minority identification&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.com.washington.edu\/news\/articles\/commonbook.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Race representation in this year\u2019s Common Book University of Washington News Laboratory Department of Communication December 2009 Kaetlyn Cordingley UW News Lab Each year, First Year Programs chooses a book as a means to bind the incoming freshman class together.
