An influential author in Caribbean, feminist, and lesbian writings, some of her notable works include: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=13596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Abeng<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=47917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>No Telephone to Heaven<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Claiming-Identity-They-Taught-Despise\/dp\/0930436067\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1498678221&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=claiming+an+identity+they+taught+me+to+despise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Claiming an Identity They Taught Me to Despise<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Free-Enterprise-Novel-Ellen-Pleasant\/dp\/0872864375\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1498678283&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=free+enterprise+michelle+cliff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Free Enterprise<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=56292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>If I Could Write This In Fire<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Land-Look-Behind-Prose-Poetry\/dp\/0932379087\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1498678324&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+land+of+look+behind+cliff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Land of Look Behind<\/em><\/a>. Cliff&#8217;s work reflected many parts of her identity, contemporary sociopolitical concerns stemming from colonialism, and a critical investment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caribbean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caribbean<\/a> and her diasporas. Her works examine the complexities of identity politics, lesbianism, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colorism<\/a>, colonialism\/post-colonialism and revolution \u2013 both of the personal variety and the political. On June 22, 2017, we gathered at the <a href=\"http:\/\/caribphil.org\/cpa-2017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caribbean Philosophical Association Annual Meeting<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYC<\/a> to honor her life and writing. This post includes the work of the roundtable participants. The roundtable, titled &#8220;&#8216;Writing in Fire&#8217;: Honoring the Life &amp; Legacy of Michelle Cliff&#8221; marked the second year that the Chair of Afro-Diasporic Literatures (me) and the Chair of the Initiative on Gender, Race, and Feminisms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philosophy.msu.edu\/people\/faculty\/xhercismendez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xhercis Mendez<\/a>) joined together to propose roundtables to honor Caribbean women writers at the CPA (at the 2016 we celebrated the 10th\/11th publication anniversary of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M._Jacqui_Alexander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M. Jacqui Alexander&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/pedagogies-of-crossing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pedagogies of Crossing<\/em><\/a>). This year two Ph.D. students &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/keishla-rivera-lopez-673580a5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keishla Rivera<\/a> (Rutgers Newark) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.msu.edu\/people\/gas\/briona-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Briona Jones<\/a> (Michigan State) &#8211; joined moderator Xhercis Mendez and I to reflect on the rich inheritance Michelle Cliff has left us.
