(Jeff Bierk\/Goodread Biography)<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Musician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickferrio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick Ferrio<\/a> is based in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peterborough,_Ontario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peterborough, Ont.<\/a>, but his roots are in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saskatchewan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saskatchewan<\/a>. He recently read <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maria_Campbell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria Campbell&#8217;s<\/a> memoir <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=17670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Half-Breed<\/em><\/a> and its account of an Indigenous woman&#8217;s encounters with racism, and the book resonated with him, thanks to his own <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cree<\/a> ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrio&#8217;s album <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickferrio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Soothsayer<\/em><\/a> also mixes several influences to create a personal style and sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mapping internal conflict<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think every Canadian should read <em>Half-Breed<\/em>. It&#8217;s an incredible story of a mixed woman whose ancestry is part Cree. She explains the racism she faced in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a>. It resonated with me as my paternal grandmother is Cree. Because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian Act<\/a>, her family was forced to leave the reserve. When she moved to Toronto, she had internal racism. She was ashamed of her identity. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She passed as white<\/a>, so she blended into white culture in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto<\/a>.
