After she marries Prince Harry<\/a>, the royal family will look a bit more like modern Britain<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

LONDON<\/em><\/a>\u2014Jean Carter had never bothered to come out for a royal appearance before. But when Prince Harry<\/a> and his fiancee, Meghan Markle<\/a>, made a visit to Brixton<\/a> this year, Carter bought a bouquet and weathered a chilly afternoon waiting for a glimpse of the couple.<\/p>\n

Carter was glad to see Harry, the happy-go-lucky, ginger-bearded son of the late Princess Diana<\/a>. As an immigrant from Jamaica<\/a>, though, Carter, 72, really wanted to lay eyes on Markle, a biracial American actress who is the subject of deep fascination here.<\/p>\n

Multiethnic Brixton is South London\u2019s<\/a> hub for a founding generation of Afro-Caribbean immigrants. It\u2019s a crossroad so central to the story of the African diaspora<\/a> that local historians call the neighborhood \u2014 with its jerk chicken grills, reggae dance halls and vibrant mural scene \u2014 the black capital of Europe<\/a>. When South African President Nelson Mandela<\/a> came to Britain in 1996<\/a> he went to Buckingham Palace<\/a> \u2014 and Brixton.<\/p>\n

Carter characterized the royal couple\u2019s visit to the neighborhood as \u201ca big statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what exactly will it mean to have a biracial member of the monarchy after Prince Harry and Markle exchange vows<\/a> on May 19?…<\/p>\n
